Susan has over 40 years of legal experience primarily in business law. She serves as outside general counsel for numerous entities and is passionate about guiding her clients through all phases of business. For clients just starting their businesses, she provides legal advice regarding choice of entity and formation issues, corporate governance, shareholders’ and members’ agreements, and securing start up financing. Susan handles timely registration with the U.S. Department of Treasury if required under the new Corporate Transparency Act. She also has extensive experience in assisting clients with purchasing existing businesses and franchises. Susan assists her clients with the negotiation and preparation of commercial contracts including service and vendor agreements, general employment matters, real estate needs including leasing (representing clients both as tenants and landlords), preparing nondisclosure agreements, protecting intellectual property including basic trademark matters, and related business issues. She guides her clients through transition, whether to family members or employees, as well as sale of the business, and associated matters.
Susan started her legal career with Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll where she represented various domestic corporations, municipalities and underwriters in structuring and offering tax-exempt municipal bond issues. She then joined US WEST, Inc. where she was responsible for all legal aspects of domestic and international mergers, acquisitions, divestitures and joint ventures. In 1999, Susan established the Hodson Law Firm, PC, which served clients for nearly 25 years before she joined Hoffman Nies Dave & Meyer LLP.
A native of Southern California, Susan attended the University of California Santa Barbara where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and Sociology. She came to Denver in 1981, where she earned her Juris Doctor at the University of Denver College of Law and made Colorado home with her family.
In 2012, Susan co-founded the Ol Lentille Foundation, a US 501(c)(3), that supports the Ol Lentille Trust, a Kenyan NGO, promoting education and conservation in north central Kenya. She travels there annually to deliver supplies needed for the community and leads groups to educate them about the amazing people and animals of East Africa.
